The National Museum of African American History & Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. Established by an Act of Congress in 2003 and opening to the public on September 24, 2016, the museum’s houses thirteen galleries and twelve interactive exhibitions chronicling African Americans’ enslavement, long struggle for freedom and achievements in culture, science, sport, and politics.

Highlights from the museum’s collection include Nat Turner’s bible, Harriet Tubman’s hymnal, “The Spirt of Tuskegee”—a vintage Stearman biplane, segregation-era Southern Railway car; a dress sewn by Rosa Parks, Louis Armstrong’s trumpet; Chuck Berry’s 1973 Red Cadillac Eldorado, and works by numerous prolific artists, such as Charles Alston, Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, and Henry O. Tanner.

The museum’s Sweet Home Café showcases the rich culture and history of African American people with traditional, authentic offerings as well as present-day food traditions.
