Call Number Mss1 Ag322 a FA2

Abstract

Main Entry: Agee, Louis Napoleon, 1911-1982.
Title: Papers, ca. 1935-1991.
Size: ca. 2,500 items (6 boxes).
Biographical Note:

Louis Napoleon Agee was born 9 October 1911, in Cumberland County, Va., the son of Robert Lee Agee and Genoy Kyle Shelton. He graduated from Farmville High School and moved to Bluefield, W. Va. After briefly working for Appalachian Power Company, he began a twenty-five-year career with Bluefield Hardware Company, a wholesale firm. He worked first as a bookkeeper, then as secretary to the president, and finally as a salesman, traveling throughout the coal-mining territory.

Louis N. Agee married Minnie Elizabeth Francis of Bluefield in 1938 and they purchased "Millview," in Cumberland County, formerly the nineteenth-century home of Dr. James Madison Blanton, Virginia's second Commissioner of Agriculture.

Leaving the hardware business, Louis Agee became a full-time dairy farmer and served on the board of the Richmond Cooperative Milk Producers Association. He compiled a revision of Dr. Purl M. Agee's The Agee Family and served as National Registrar of the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia. He died 18 February 1982 in Farmville, Va.

Summary:

Papers compiled by Louis N. Agee, a successful dairy farmer in Cumberland County, Va., primarily concerning his research on the Agee family in America and his publication of the Agee Register (Baltimore, Md., Gateway Press, Inc., 1982). Includes extensive correspondence with members of the Agee and related families; research notes and copies of documents from various localities in Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia; documentation concerning the publication of the Agee Register (including post-publication letters to Mrs. Minnie Elizabeth Agee concerning purchase of copies of the volumes and often enclosing additional family information or corrections to the published work); and materials concerning Louis N. Agee’s long association with and service as an officer in the Virginia Branch of the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia.

Among the related families for which extensive materials appear in this collection are the Blanton, Bosley, Bott, Chastain, Foard, Ford, Fore, and Williamson families. Also, includes research concerning the Agee (Agé) family in France.

Also, include information on Agee’s interest in cockfighting; and materials concerning Millview Farm, Cumberland County, Va. (including a plat of the farm and an insurance survey).

Provenance: Gift of Mrs. Elizabeth F. Agee, Farmville, Va., through the courtesy of Mrs. Susan A. Riggs, Williamsburg, Va., in 1992. Accessioned 17 October 2001.
Restrictions: None.
