Abstract: Research materials compiled by Anne (Hobson) Freeman while writing company histories of two Richmond, Va., investment firms: Scott & Stringfellow, and Wheat First Butcher Singer. The Wheat,First Butcher Singer project ultimately resulted in a biography of James C. Wheat, Jr.

Scope and Content Information

The collection is composed of research materials that Anne H. Freeman compiled for projects documenting the histories of two Richmond investment firms, Scott & Stringfellow and Wheat First Butcher Singer.

In preparation for the 90th anniversary of its founding in 1893, Scott & Stringfellow commissioned Mrs. Freeman to conduct a series of interviews with retired members of the firm in order to document its early years. There are notes from and partial transcriptions of interviews with a number of Scott & Stringfellow employees; the rest of the materials in the series consist of supplementary research; research and articles on the failed merger of Scott & Stringfellow with another Richmond firm, Davenport & Co.; biographical data on the firm’s officers and executives; and correspondence and financial information concerning the project.

The second series contains similar materials – background research, interview notes and transcriptions – as well as the manuscript for a published history of Wheat First Butcher Singer and of James Clifton Wheat, Jr. Wheat Chief Executive Officer John L. McElroy, Jr., approached Mrs. Freeman in 1991 with the possibility of writing a brief history of the firm. Not long into the project, however, James C. Wheat, Jr., son of the firm’s founder and its guiding force for most of the 20th century, died suddenly, and it was decided to shift the focus of the project to a biographical project on Wheat. As a result, the majority of the materials in this series pertain to Wheat’s life and his role in the company’s growth.

The project that Anne H. Freeman began for Scott & Stringfellow, the well-known Richmond investment firm, in 1982 was meant to produce material that could be used for the firm’s upcoming 90th anniversary celebration. Series 2. Wheat First Butcher Singer Research Project, 1920s-1994.

Wheat First Butcher Singer commissioned Freeman to gather information and stories about the origins of the firm through traditional research, as well as by conducting oral histories of firm principals. The most important of these was James C. Wheat, Jr., the son of the firm’s founder, and the man who orchestrated the rise of the firm from the 1940s on. At the time of the project’s inception, Wheat was no longer serving as an officer of the firm, but he remained an active part of the company. However, in April 1992, two months into the project, Wheat died suddenly of a heart attack. Company executives made the decision to shift the focus of the history project from a more general firm history to a biography of James C. Wheat, Jr. As a result, most of the materials in this series focus specifically on his life and his role in the evolution of the company from a small brokerage firm to one of the largest financial investment firms in the country.

Wheat inherited the congenital disorder retinitis pigmentosa from his mother; he was completely blind by his mid-twenties. Rather than expressing frustration or hopelessness at his condition, Wheat managed his disability with great success, and in fact, rejected the notion that his blindness was a disability at all. This fortitude is repeatedly mentioned in interviews with Wheat’s friends and associates.

Series 2.1. Background Research.

This subseries contains research materials that Mrs. Freeman gathered as she worked on the project for Wheat First Butcher Singer. Folders 40-57 concern Wheat First Butcher Singer and its predecessors. Folders 58-64 concern Richmond and Virginia businesses founded about the same time as J.C. Wheat & Co., including Best Products and Circuit City, as well as Anderson & Strudwick, Chesapeake Corporation, Ethyl Corporation, Glave Newman Anderson Architects, James River Corporation, Lane Company, Inc., Life Insurance Company of Virginia, Mays, Valentine, Davenport & Moore, Overnight Transportation, Philip Morris, USA, Richmond Corporation, Scott & Stringfellow, and Universal Leaf Corporation, and Virginia Electric and Power Company. Folders 65-66 contain Conquest and Wheat genealogical information. Of particular interest is a sixty-page handwritten letter to Wheat from his maternal grandmother, Emma (Parker) Conquest, which describes her childhood as a member of a Quaker family in Philadelphia, Pa., and her transition to life as a young married woman in Richmond, Va.. (folder 65). Folder 67 contains information on James C. Wheat, Sr., founder of J.C. Wheat & Co. Folders 68-79 concern James C. Wheat, Jr. Folder 80 concerns James C. Wheat III. Series 2.3. Interviews, 1991-1994.

This subseries contains interviews that Mrs. Freeman conducted between 1991 and 1994, plus excerpts from a few done for an earlier project on the law firm of Hunton & Williams, with individuals who knew Jim Wheat. Each interview was originally recorded using micro cassettes, with some of them also recorded on 8mm video cassettes. Mrs. Freeman then copied some of the micro cassettes to standard audio cassettes and some of the 8mm video cassettes to VHS cassettes. Not all interviews were transcribed. Those that were are represented first in this series, arranged alphabetically. Following these are the original micro cassette and 8mm video recordings of the interviews. At the end of the series are the audio and video copies.

A master list of interviews, including all available formats, appears in the Appendix.

The interviews that were transcribed fall into one of three categories: associates of Jim Wheat, family members of Jim Wheat, and Wheat, First Butcher Singer officers. In these interviews Freeman discusses a variety of topics relevant to Wheat’s involvement in the business, as well as personal qualities that contributed to his success. Interview subjects include a number of prominent Richmonders, such as Frances and Sydney Lewis (founders of Best Products and philanthropists) and Robert Burruss (a partner at McGuire Woods), as well as the chief executive officers of Wheat, First Butcher Singer: John McElroy, Carlyle Tiller, and Marshall Wishnack. Mrs. Freeman had the opportunity to interview James Clifton Wheat, Jr., on two occasions, although not on video. The interviews average about an hour in length and address not just Wheat and Wheat, First Butcher Singer, but also life in Richmond during the Depression and the following decades and his attendance at Virginia Military Institute and the culture surrounding that school. Mrs. Freeman is particularly concerned with determining how Wheat managed to cope with his blindness and the degree to which his disability contributed to his business success. She also attempts, through her discussions with those close to Wheat, to gain understanding about his relationship with his father, James Clifton Wheat, Sr. On several occasions Freeman questions her subjects on their opinions of Wheat’s views on racial issues (see Robert Burrus interview).
