Slave Hunt by Thomas MoranThe Virginia Museum of History & Culture is organizing an exhibition for 2019 that explores 400 years of African American history, from the arrival of the first Africans in Virginia in 1619 to the present day. See a preview of some of the objects that will be featured in the exhibition and hear their stories from the curator. Drawn from the museum and library collections of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, these items chronicle the trials and triumphs of African Americans. There are, for example, emancipation deeds, abolitionist imagery, portraits of important figures, civil rights protest materials, and political ephemera. This program also provides an opportunity to meet our new curator and to learn about the curatorial process—what goes on behind-the-scenes in organizing an exhibition.
