On September 13 at noon, Dr. William Rasmussen will lead a Gallery Walk entitled “Washington: The Myths and the Man.” Join us to learn about George Washington the private man and the public figure.

The Call of the Sea, 1747, by Jean Leon Gerome FerrisFollowing his death in 1799, George Washington was glorified for more than a century. No better examples of this phenomenon are the romanticized and popular history paintings of the Philadelphia artist Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863–1930). This exhibition presents 13 original paintings by Ferris along with 17 historical documents that reveal facts about Washington’s actual life. Those letters, surveys, maps, and farm records of Washington reveal the actual man. The exhibit and this gallery walk focus on Washington’s private life at Mount Vernon to reveal what motivated Washington the public servant.

Gallery Walks take place on Wednesdays at noon and last one hour. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
