On April 6, 1865, nearly a quarter of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s army, more than 7,700 men, were killed, wounded, or captured at the battle of Sailor’s Creek. Seventy-two hours later, the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at the village of Appomattox Court House signaled the end of major combat actions in Virginia and led to the end of the American Civil War.
