Join us for the public exhibition opening of Fresh Paint: Murals Inspired by the Story of Virginia, featuring murals by 10 Virginia artists inspired by objects from our collections.

Opening day will be filled with art-themed, interactive, and family-friendly activities in celebration of this unprecedented exhibition.

  • See the completed murals installed side by side with the items from our collection that inspired them

  • Enjoy a short film with highlights from the mural-making process and artist interviews

  • Add your own artistic mark at the audience art space: create object-inspired artwork and practice techniques of mural artists from the past and present

The Fresh Paint exhibition opening will also launch the sale of a new, richly-illustrated publication, The Story of Virginia: Highlights from the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, co-authored by Jamie O. Bosket,  VMHC President and CEO, and Dr. William M. S. Rasmussen, VMHC Senior Curator of Exhibitions and Lora M. Robins Curator of Art. This 200-page book, available for purchase in our museum shop, features 400+ objects that represent the highlights of the museum's collection, including rare letters, remarkable documents, fine paintings, furniture, silver, maps, prints, firearms, uniforms, photographs, and unexpected items.

Following the public exhibition opening, Fresh Paint will be open to the public daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm through Sunday, April 14, 2019. Included with museum admission. Learn more.
