Celebrate the Fourth of July with us! We'll have a day full of star-spangled festivities, including live music, a scavenger hunt, highlights gallery tours, picnicking on the lawn, a photo booth, historic reenactors, and a large-scale citizenship naturalization ceremony.

Fourth of July Schedule:

10:30 - 11:30 am       Naturalization Ceremony (Front Lawn)

See 100 candidates for citizenship from nearly 50 countries will take the Oath of Allegiance on the front terrace of the museum. Held in partnership with the U. S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and officiated by the Honorable Roger L. Gregory, Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

11:00 am - 2:00 pm     Concessions for sale (South Entrance and Cabell Gallery)
Stay fortified throughout the day and enjoy your purchases in a picnic on the front lawn or in our air-conditioned lobby

11:30 am - 4:00 pm     Demonstrations by WWI Reenactors (Gottwald Gateway)    

11:45 am - 1:00 pm     Live music by the John Marshall High School Alumni Band (Halsey Lecture Hall)

1:00 - 4:00 pm     Front Lawn Fun! Games from the Past  (Front Lawn)
Toys like Jacks, Jacob’s Ladders, and YoYos have been found around the world for thousands of years. Step into the past and play with Colonial-era replicas of these games and take part in slinky races down our front steps, giant checkers on the lawn, and even decorate your own WWI fighter paper airplane. Grab a friend and play The Snake Game, where you can try your luck in getting George Washington back home to Mount Vernon.

1:00 - 4:00 pm     Highlights Exhibition Tours – Each tour is 30 minutes long and included with suggested admission (Gallery Entrance)

  • 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm - Highlights Tour of the WW1 America Exhibition 

  • 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm - Highlights Tour of the Story of Virginia Exhibition

All-Day Activities:

  • Make Independence Day-themed crafts (Bluford Classroom)

  • Sign the “Declaration of Independence” (Gottwald Gateway)

  • Get into history with our green screen photobooth (Gottwald Gateway)

In celebration of the 241st anniversary of American independence, the VHS hosted a full day of patriotic festivities, including a large-scale citizenship naturalization ceremony, live music, and much more. More than 1,200 people attended the 2017 Independence Day Celebration.
