The Story of Virginia

Paying for research

Our research librarians are able to provide a moderate amount of research (maximum of one hour) for a prepaid fee of $30. This includes a limited number of photocopies. The fee is waived for Virginia Historical Society members.

The fee is nonrefundable, and research results are not guaranteed. Researchers are encouraged to contact a reference librarian before submitting their research request, either through the Ask a question about our collections form or at 804.342.9677.

Also, note that although the Virginia Historical Society has genealogical materials, the principal library for genealogical research in Virginia is the Library of Virginia, which serves as the official archival repository of the commonwealth.

Located at the Library of Virginia are:

  • Deeds

  • Wills

  • Vital records

  • Military service records

Please complete the online research form to request help with your research.

Inquires are answered in the order received. Please allow four weeks from receipt of payment for a response. Additional genealogical information is available by phone at 804.342.9649.
