Abstract: Include office files, project files, drawings and plans of the architectural firm of Edward F. Sinnott, and its successor, Edward F. Sinnott & Son, Richmond, Va.

Scope and Content Information

Chiefly project files and drawings of the partnership of Luther P. Hartsook and Edward F. Sinnott, and the architectural firms of Edward F. Sinnott and its successor, Sinnott & Son.

Project files contain correspondence with clients and contractors, financial information, shop drawings, specifications, and technical information concerning fixtures and materials. The completeness of the files varies. Drawings and plans consist of the most complete set, with partial, void, and duplicate sheets discarded.

While associated with Luther Hartsook during the years 1920–1933, Sinnott assisted in designing a number of private residences for C.A. Bayler, Jr., Fisher W. Bruce, Mrs. D.J. Coleman, William F. Kastelberg, and Ordway Puller; church buildings for Barton Heights Methodist Episcopal South, Fifth Street Baptist, Richmond, Va., First Christian, Laurel Presbyterian, Richmond, Va., Oakland Methodist Episcopal, Chesterfield County, Va., Parkview Baptist, Richmond, Va., and Sacred Heart Cathedral, Richmond, Va.; schools for Hanover County, including Ashland, Doswell, and Montpelier, as well as Epiphany Episcopal School, Mizpah Presbyterian Church and School, and Monte Maria Academy; and companies, including Church Hill Vehicle Company, S.Q. Kline Company, A. Meyers & Son, Rawlings Motor Company, Tobacco Foil Company, and Yorktown Ice and Storage Company.

Once on his own, in 1934, Sinnott continued to focus on Hanover County school projects: Atlee, Battlefield Park, Henry Clay, and Rockville; but also designed a number of theaters: Brookland Theatre, Richmond, Daw Theatre, Tappahannock, Henrico Theater, Richmond, Page Theatre, Luray, Park Theatre, Richmond, Robinson Theatre, Richmond, Roth Pitts Theater, Suffolk, Rex Theater, Williamsburg, and Walker Theater, Richmond, Va.; commercial buildings for Flowers School Equipment Company, Frank A. Bliley Funeral Home, J.R. Watkins Co., Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home, Massaponax Sand and Gravel, Southern Aid Society of Richmond, Streitman Biscuit Company, and Yorktown Ice and Storage/Yorktown Supply Company; and prototype houses for developers: Hutzler & Carr, Inc., Jones & Robins, Inc., and Laburnum Construction Corporation. It was during this pre-World War II period that Sinnott also began his relationship with Franklin Federal Savings & Loan, and worked on the historic Crozet House, Richmond, Va. There is little significant work between 1942 and 1945, as Sinnott had closed his office and was pursuing civilian war-time employment.

Beginning in 1945, Sinnott increased his work with schools, including public school buildings in Caroline (C.T. Smith), Hanover (Hanover County Training School), and King William (King William County Training School and Sharon Indian School) counties, but also undertook a number of parochial school projects, including Benedictine High, St. Benedict's, St. Elizabeth's, St. Gertrude's, St. John's, and St. Paul's Catholic schools, all in Richmond. He collaborated with a number of developers, including A.F. Barnette, H.J. Bernstein, Carter C. Chinnis, Stanley Orginz, Leon Siegel, and Morton Zedd, but most importantly, in 1958 he began his relationship with developer Paul Gordon and with Gordon's related construction firm, Pauburne, Inc.

During the period from 1958, when Edward F. Sinnott, Jr., joined the firm, until Edward F. Sinnott, Sr.'s death in 1974, the partnership saw an increase in commercial work: banks, medical offices, and office buildings and parks. From 1975 until 1987, Paul Gordon Associates had to share Sinnott Jr.'s attention with the Gayton Crossing Partnership and Investors Savings & Loan, both of which kept the firm busy developing Gayton Crossing Shopping Center and Gayton Crossing Office Park, as well as numerous branch banks in Richmond and Charlottesville. By this time Sinnott, Jr., had become heavily invested Gayton Crossing, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of Investors Savings & Loan.

Organization

Divided into four series as follows: Series 1. Office files; Series 2. Project files; Series 3. Drawings and plans; and Series 4. Personal files and Miscellaneous. Personal files and Miscellaneous materials are subdivided into papers relating to Edward F. Sinnott Sr., papers relating to Edward F. Sinnott, Jr., Newspaper clippings, and Photographic materials.

Biographical/Historical Information

Edward Francis Sinnott, Sr., was the son of Irish immigrants Patrick Joseph Sinnott (1857–1943) and Alice May McGuinness (1859–1921). Sinnott was born on 27 June 1890 in Philadelphia, Penn., but moved with his family to Richmond, Va., around 1900 and lived there until his death in 1974.

After graduation from St. Patrick’s High School in 1912, Sinnott worked as a draftsman for the firm of Noland & Baskerville. He then served several years as an apprentice under architects Marcellus Wright, Charles M. Robinson, and W. Duncan Lee. His time with Duncan Lee was interrupted by World War I, during which Sinnott served in the 1st Virginia Artillery, rising to the rank of second lieutenant. After the War Sinnott became joined with architect Luther P. Hartsook. While never receiving an official architectural education, Sinnott became a registered architect in 1925, joining Hartsook as an associate.

In 1934, Sinnott established his own architectural firm at 112 East Cary Street in Richmond. Many of Sinnott’s early designs were in the Art Deco school, including plans for the Robinson Theatre in Richmond’s historic Church Hill neighborhood and the Henrico Theatre in Highland Springs, Va. During this period he supplemented his income with work for the National Park Service on the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS).

With business dropping off as World War II approached, Sinnott closed up his office in 1942, taking instead positions with J.P. Ferguson and Company working on the Richmond Air Base, and with the National Catholic Community Service, where he served as manager of the McGill Catholic Union, originally affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, but used during war-time for housing and entertaining military personnel en route to new duty stations.

In 1946 Sinnott restarted his architectural practice. In 1956, his son Edward, Jr., having served in the U.S. Navy and received his architecture degree from VPI, became a partner in Edward F. Sinnott & Son. In the 1960s the firm was closely associated with real estate developer Paul Gordon, for whom they designed a number of apartment complexes and office buildings in downtown Richmond. Following his father’s death in 1974, Edward, Jr., continued operating the firm until his own retirement in the 1990s. Edward F. Sinnott, Jr., died December 2, 2005.

Edward F. Sinnott, Sr., married Merie Virginia Moriconi (1893–1962) in 1922, and had with her three children: Alice May (Sinnott) Honenberger (b. 1923), Edward F. Sinnott, Jr. (1925–2004), and Patricia Anne Sinnott (1929–1997).

Edward, Jr., married Virginia Lloyd Hatcher (1926–1982) and with her had son Edward F. Sinnott III and daughters Mary Lloyd (Sinnott) Parks and Tracy (Sinnott) Mason. Mr. Sinnott remarried; his second wife, Anne Paul Sinnott, survived him.

Series 1.2. Financial materials, 1925, 1938, 1946–1991

These materials consist chiefly of receipts and receipted accounts for items purchased for office use or charges passed on to clients. Folder titles reflect the names given by office staff at the time of creation, and show various ways of records keeping throughout the life of the firm. Also reflected are several times of financial distress, particularly 1974 and again in the late 1980s, when the majority of bills were paid late and the firm’s bank account overdrawn. Of additional interest are the Disbursements journal, 1981–1988, which details office expenditures and profits, and the folder concerning Paul Gordon Associates, showing the extent to which the Sinnotts relied on Gordon's patronage and their difficulties being paid for same.

Series 2. Project files, 1920–1998 (bulk 1920–1987).

Project files are arranged in three subseries according to the way in which they were numbered. Subseries 2.1 covers the period of Sinnott’s association with Luther P. Hartsook, 1920–1933, and the first years of his solo practice, 1934–1942. These projects were numbered sequentially. Series 2.1 covers the period 1945–1998, when Sinnott was reestablishing his practice after World War II, through his partnership with his son, and after the elder’s death until the office was closed, ca. 1987. At the beginning of this period, Sinnott experimented with project numbers that repeated on a yearly basis, but included a two-digit suffix for the year. In 1950 he began numbering his projects sequentially and attaching the two-digit year and this practice continued for the duration of the firm’s life.

Series 2.3. includes unnumbered projects, some of which represent proposed but never built projects, some of which were relatively small projects, and some for which the Sinnotts served as consulting or advisory architects in collaboration with another firm.

Researchers should note that had suffered extensive water and insect damage over a number of years. Those files deemed too damaged were not transferred when the collection was received in 2002, and additional damaged materials were weeded during processing. Therefore, not every Sinnott project is represented in this inventory.

Project files typically contain correspondence with the client, change orders, financial materials, copies of specifications, technical information about materials and fixtures, and occasionally plans, mostly shop drawings. Most project files have corresponding drawings or plans in Series 3; however, there are files for which drawings are not available. These are indicated with an *.

Series 2.1. Project files, 1920–1942.

While associated with Luther Hartsook during the years 1920–1933, Sinnott assisted in designing a number of private residences for C.A. Bayler, Jr., Fisher W. Bruce, Mrs. D.J. Coleman, William F. Kastelberg, and Ordway Puller; church buildings for Barton Heights Methodist Episcopal South, Fifth Street Baptist, Richmond, Va., First Christian, Laurel Presbyterian, Richmond, Va., Oakland Methodist Episcopal, Chesterfield County, Va., Parkview Baptist, Richmond, Va., and Sacred Heart Cathedral, Richmond, Va.; schools for Hanover County, including Ashland, Doswell, and Montpelier, as well as Epiphany Episcopal School, Mizpah Presbyterian Church and School, and Monte Maria Academy; and companies, including Church Hill Vehicle Company, S.Q. Kline Company, A. Meyers & Son, Rawlings Motor Company, Tobacco Foil Company, and Yorktown Ice and Storage Company.

Once on his own, in 1934, Sinnott continued to focus on Hanover County school projects: Atlee, Battlefield Park, Henry Clay, and Rockville; but also designed a number of theaters: Brookland Theatre, Richmond, Daw Theatre, Tappahannock, Henrico Theater, Richmond, Page Theatre, Luray, Park Theatre, Richmond, Robinson Theatre, Richmond, Roth Pitts Theater, Suffolk, Rex Theater, Williamsburg, and Walker Theater, Richmond, Va.; commercial buildings for Flowers School Equipment Company, Frank A. Bliley Funeral Home, J.R. Watkins Co., Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home, Massaponax Sand and Gravel, Streitman Biscuit Company, and Yorktown Ice and Storage/Yorktown Supply Company; and prototype houses for developers: Hutzler & Carr, Inc., Jones & Robins, Inc., and Laburnum Construction Corporation. There are several numbers repeated in this series. Occasionally there is an indication of “A” or “B” to distinguish different projects. However, where this is not included on the original files, an (a), (b), etc. has been added to indicate multiple projects.

Series 2.2. Project files, 1945–1990.

Benedict’s, St. Elizabeth’s, St. Gertrude’s, St. John’s, and St. Paul’s Catholic schools. He collaborated with a number of developers, including A.F. Barnette, H.J. Bernstein, Carter C. Chinnis, Stanley Orginz, Leon Siegel, and Morton Zedd, but most importantly, in 1958 he began his relationship with developer Paul Gordon and with Gordon’s related construction firm, Pauburne, Inc.

The period from 1958, when Edward F. Sinnott, Jr., joined the firm, and until Edward F. Sinnott, Sr.’s death in 1974, the partnership saw an increase in commercial work: banks, medical offices, and office buildings and parks. From 1975 until 1987, Paul Gordon Associates had to share Sinnott Jr.’s attention with the Gayton Crossing Partnership and Investors Savings & Loan, both of which kept the firm busy developing Gayton Crossing Shopping Center and Gayton Crossing Office Park, as well as numerous branch banks in Richmond and Charlottesville. By this time Sinnott, Jr., had become heavily invested Gayton Crossing, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of Investors Savings & Loan.

Series 2.3. Project files, Unnumbered.

These files are arranged alphabetically by client, where known, by project name where client is unidentified, and by address where neither is available.

Unnumbered projects include some which were proposed and got to the design stage, but never built, projects too small to be given the full design treatment, and some for which the Sinnotts served as consulting or advisory architects in collaboration with another firm. However, several of the unnumbered projects were significant, including the Southern Aid Society building, Richmond, Va., Richmond Plaza, Richmond, Va., and Walsingham Academy, James City County, Va.

Series 3. Drawings and plans, 1920–1998 (bulk 1920–1987).

The arrangement of this series mirrors that of Series 2, with Series 3.1. containing plans for the period 1920–1942, numbered sequentially; Series 3.2. containing plans for the period 1945–1990, consisting of a sequential number and two digit year in combination; and Series 3.3. containing unnumbered plans, arranged alphabetically by client. There are some drawings for which there are no project files. These are indicated with an *.

Researchers should also remember that prior to receipt in 2002 these materials were not stored under the best of circumstances, and had suffered from water and insect damage over a number of years. Those files deemed too damaged were not transferred, and additional damaged materials were weeded during processing. Therefore, not every Sinnott project is represented in this inventory.

Series 3.1. Drawings and plans, 1920–1942.

Series 4. Personal and Miscellaneous Materials, 1921–1989.

Series 4.1. Edward F. Sinnott, Sr., Personal Files, 1921–1966.

These materials relate to Edward F. Sinnott Sr.’s life outside of his architectural practice, although there is certainly overlap. Files are arranged alphabetically by title, which is generally based on either the format or the subject of the material.

The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities file contains chiefly publications. The Better Homes in America Contest file includes newspaper clippings concerning Sinnott’s involvement in the contest; as part of the contest publicity, Sinnott submitted “before” and “after” illustrations of existing Richmond houses to illustrate how, with little effort, they could be modernized. The Christopher Columbus Statue file contains invitations and newspaper accounts concerning the Statue’s unveiling in 1927. The Clubs and Organizations file concerns Sinnott’s membership in a number of local civic organizations, chiefly Catholic.

Materials on Crickett Cottage concern a Sinnott family vacation home on the Rappahannock River. Materials concerning the Federal Housing Authority and the Historic American Building Survey reflect Sinnott’s employment by these WPA programs. The Mary Dante Ferrandini file relates to the person from whom Sinnott purchased his house, and is chiefly a series of bills and accounts sent to Mrs. Ferrandini while out of town. The pamphlet, The Architect, authored by Luther P. Hartsook and Edward F. Sinnott, discusses the relationship between architect and client.

Sinnott worked briefly as a sales representative for the Hydraulic Steelcraft Company before devoting himself full-time to architecture. In 1944 and 1945 Sinnott was employed by the National Catholic Community Service to manage the McGill Catholic Union building in Richmond; Catholic military personnel took advantage of the Union’s recreational facilities while traveling through Richmond to other duty stations.

The file for Richmond Air Base, where Sinnott was employed as a draftsman, contains several scripts for skits based on officers and others working on the project; these scripts are unsigned and nowhere is it indicated that Sinnott wrote them. Material concerning Sinnott’s younger sister, Patricia Ann Sinnott, and the estate of his father, Patrick J. Sinnott, finish this series.

Series 4.2. Edward F. Sinnott, Jr., Personal Files, 1942–1989

These materials concerning Edward F. Sinnott, Jr.’s life outside his architectural practice. Of particular interest is more information on Crickett Cottage, the family vacation home, and on Cumberland Farm, property inherited from his wife’s side of the family. Financial statements were produced at the request of Investors Savings and Loan, as Sinnott was a member of the Board of Directors. The Sinnotts’ contributed financial support to the Richmond Jazz Festival in 1989. Sinnott served on both the Building and Long-range Planning committees of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church. His connection with Virginia Polytechnic Institute as both a student and an active alumna are also reflected.

Series 4.3. Newspaper Clippings.

The bulk of these clippings were likely collected by Edward F. Sinnott, Sr., and document a number of his projects. In addition, he collected articles on building trends, including the increasing focus on high-rise apartments to deal with housing shortages. Also present are clippings concerning Richmond’s Catholic community, in particular changes in personnel.

Series 4.4. Photographic Images, Renderings

Photographs pertaining to specific projects have been filed in project files, wherever possible. The images in this series are chiefly unidentified and their purpose unclear. Some of the slides may relate to client presentations, but without identifying information and in the absence of apparent physical order, they have been combined. The photographs of the Ferruccio Legnaioli sculptures relate to the salvage of items from the demolition of the Capitol Theatre, 2525 W. Broad Street, a Carneal & Johnston building designed in 1926.

This series also includes miscellaneous renderings of both commercial and residential buildings that are either unidentified or do not have any other associated plans or files.
