In our library

Our research library, which provides access to an unrivaled collection of primary and secondary sources, is open to the public for historical and genealogical researchYou can access the vast collections of the Virginia Historical Society in person or online.

How can we help with your research?

LIbrary Hours

The VMHC is currently closed for construction, but we will continue to offer a robust variety of virtual events and digital programs. Learn more about our dramatic renovation and expansion project. While we are closed, Library staff are happy to answer research questions and inquiries about photocopies of manuscript and print materials at 804.342.9677 or reference@virginiahistory.org.

The Museum and Library are located at 428 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard, Richmond, Virginia 23220. View an interactive map.

Facility Information

Parking is available in our lot locate at the rear of the museum. The entrance is at the corner of Kensington Avenue and Shepard Street. Our building is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. View a complete list of Guest Rules & Regulations.

The extensive collection of our library is open to all Virginia Historical Society patrons, from the curious visitor to the professional researcher.
